Saturday Centus: Texas

Okay, I’ve been on a bit of a writing hiatus, not by intent, just kinda losing track fo the days passing. But I could not pass this one up. Jenny Matlock has grabbed my attention!

How? You ask. Why, by the prompt from this week’s Saturday Centus. (Click the link to go see the other entries) And that prompt is: “There’s a yellow rose in Texas.”

Now, why would that particular prompt catch my eye? Well, cause I was born and raised in Texas, spent the first 30 years of my life there. So how could I not respond to a prompt like that? It was totally out of my hands. As is the response that blossomed in me from the prompt. I know I’m not a poet, but I couldn’t help but change from prose on hearing those words in my mind. Btw, it’s a tad short – only 91 words, but adding another “stanza” would have taken it over the limit.

Texas

There’s a yellow rose in Texas
that blooms within my heart
and never will it leave me
it’s been there from the start
for I was born in Texas
and raised up Texas proud
and if y’all don’t believe me
you should hear me talk out loud

Now life has moved me onward
to live in distant lands
where people talk all funny
and are hard to understand
but don’t be filled with sadness
there’s nothing here to grieve
cause you can take the girl from Texas
but Texas never leaves

  1. I don’t know how to do this: offer Name/Url as an option to comment

I looked at my layout and am still stymied with the endeavor.

I love the rhythm of this little piece…it was lovely imagery.

    • Thank you Jenny. As for the name/url, some people can do it, but not all, don’t know why, as I don’t use my blogspot. For now, though, I think maybe someone fixed something because I can post comments on yours with the WP option, no problem. Thanks for cooming by! πŸ™‚

Your words show such pride. Loved the poem! I guess I know three yellow roses now. :)~Ames

    • Thank you for dropping by, Ames. Yes, I guess there is a certain pride that comes with growing up Texan, lol. It really is true that you can’t take the Texas out of the girl (or guy).

  6. I love the line “you should hear me talk out loud” because people are forever asking me(born in Atlanta) where I’m from. Funny, but I rarely ask others where they grew up. It kind of annoys me when people say, “I love your accent.” It makes me want to say, ” well I detect that deep, midwestern twang in your voice and it reminds me of two cats fighting.”

    • It never really annoyed me, lol, though I didn’t have too bad an accent – only when with family, then it would come out strong. My accent in French is rather unique, though, as it’s a blend of the region of Switzerland I’m in and my Texas heritage. Very different from the typical UK accent when speaking French. It fits somehow because the region I live in is known for their accent and it’s similar to what one would call a texas drawl. Thanks for the visit, Judie, always nice to see you!

    • I can’t take credit for the photo, but yes, I love yellow roses too. Though to be honest, roses in general are not my preferred flowers – never could handle them without getting pricked by a thorn! πŸ˜‰ Thanks for visiting, Sandra.
